Wilding Wimborne's aim is to help the reversal of dramatic insect and wildlife loss by bringing the community together to 'Take Action for Insects'. There are 7 objectives derived from Professor Dave Goulson's report on 'the decline of insects'.
1. To bring the Wimborne community together to raise
awareness and address the local loss of insects and other wildlife.
2. To reduce the impact of items and activities that are harmful to wildlife: for example, limit the use of herbicides and pesticides; avoid peat-based compost; reduce light pollution.
3. To build homes for wildlife and erect them around the town and in people’s own gardens as community activities.
4. To provide food for wildlife and increase the native flora in the town by Identifying suitable areas and planting them with native wildflowers.
5. To increase the tree canopy cover from 15% to 20%. by undertaking planting on green spaces, streets and the river valleys, while providing a diversity of tree species to provide food and habitat for wildlife.
6. To provide opportunities for people to interact with nature through events, walks, planting and growing fruit and vegetables for the benefit of the local community.
7. To protect our rivers by monitoring their health and pollution events.
WHO ARE WE?
We are a sub-group of Wimborne War on Waste, local individuals and groups
who are concerned about the biodiversity crisis and want to do something
about it.
WHAT'S THE ISSUE?
We are witnessing the largest extinction event on Earth since the dinosaurs,
with 41% of insect species facing extinction. Two causes are loss of habitat
and overuse of pesticides. Insects pollinate a third of our food crops and are
the main food source of much wildlife, so this is a grave cause for concern.*

WHAT'S OUR AIM?
Populations can recover, so it's not too late to act. Our aim is to work
together as a community to maintain and increase insect and other
biodiversity in and around Wimborne.

Wilding Wimborne is partnering with Walford Mill to bring you a plant-swap opportunity. We all tend to plant too many seeds and wonder what to do with the extra that germinate. Or we split an established plant and don't want to throw away the spare root.
Come to Walford Mill and take advantage of the plants on offer: you can leave any plants that you don't need and take some that you do!
Dorset Bird Club with Wilding Wimborne.
Meet Dr George Green, a trustee of the Dorset Bird Club with many years of experience in bird watching, for a guided walk around Wimborne Burial ground in search of bird life.
The tour should last between about one and one and a half hours. Bring binoculars and wear appropriate clothes and foot wear for this outdoor tour, which will require a good level of mobility.
Solitary Bee Week - about raising awareness for the solitary bees.
With over 240 species in the UK, they make up 90% of the bee population and along with other pollinating animals are responsible for one third of all the food we eat. However, like our honeybees and bumblebees, they are under threat and need our help.
The Great Big Green Week is the UK's biggest ever celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.
Welcome to Great Big Green Week 2025, when a million people – just like you – will come together to be part of a wave of actions for friends and family, climate and nature.
We can all make small swaps, large swaps and swaps that change the system, to make our communities better.
By coming together, we’ll also send a message loud and clear to our politicians and decision makers that we need to swap old ways for better ways now.
Organised by the Royal Entomological Society, and supported by partner organisations throughout the UK and Europe, Insect Week is a celebration of all things insect.
Wherever you live, it’s an opportunity to take part in insect science, get to know insects, learn from experts, and have fun.
