Wimborne Swifts

Wimborne Swifts

Swifts have always been a feature in our skies above Wimborne. Their distinctive screams as they zip around the Minster, across the square and neighbouring streets, but their numbers have dwindled and they NEED OUR HELP.

This is a joint venture between Wilding Wimborne and Merley Nature Group. We are community led groups working to improve our environment and the health of out community. Working closely together helps to achieve even bigger and better things.
We have many projects on the go throught the year which include surveying Wimborne to better understand where Swifts are concentrated and to try and identify nest sites, we can then focus our efforts to safeguard existing nest locations and to provide more nesting sites, to hopefully expand the population.
We are also part of a wider Swift network across Dorset, all working together to halt the decline of Swifts and reverse their fortunes.

Plant Swap @ Walford Mill

Wilding Wimborne is partnering with Walford Mill to bring you a plant-swap opportunity.  We all tend to plant too many seeds and wonder what to do with the extra that germinate.  Or we split an established plant and don't want to throw away the spare root.

Come to Walford Mill and take advantage of the plants on offer:  you can leave any plants that you don't need and take some that you do!

Discovering Birds Walk

Dorset Bird Club with Wilding Wimborne.

Meet Dr George Green, a trustee of the Dorset Bird Club with many years of experience in bird watching, for a guided walk around Wimborne Burial ground in search of bird life.

The tour should last between about one and one and a half hours.  Bring binoculars and wear appropriate clothes and foot wear for this outdoor tour, which will require a good level of mobility.

Solitary Bee Week

Solitary Bee Week  - about raising awareness for the solitary bees.

With over 240 species in the UK, they make up 90% of the bee population and along with other pollinating animals are responsible for one third of all the food we eat. However, like our honeybees and bumblebees, they are under threat and need our help.

The Great Big Green Week

The Great Big Green Week is the UK's biggest ever celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.

Welcome to Great Big Green Week 2025, when a million people – just like you – will come together to be part of a wave of actions for friends and family, climate and nature.

We can all make small swaps, large swaps and swaps that change the system, to make our communities better.

By coming together, we’ll also send a message loud and clear to our politicians and decision makers that we need to swap old ways for better ways now.
