Join the E-Waste Hunt - Retrieve, Recycle, and Revive!

This year’s day runs under the slogan “Join the e-waste hunt - retrieve, recycle, and revive!” focusing on the unused electronics that people store in their homes without realising these items contain valuable materials that could gain a new life. E-waste includes anything with a plug, cable, or battery, but the most often ‘forgotten’ items are small electronics: old mobile phones, cables, USB keys, card readers, game consoles, and other devices that are often kept out of sight in drawers.

WHAT IS SECOND HAND SEPTEMBER?

Second Hand September is a campaign that promotes donating, reusing, rewearing and restyling your clothes during September – and beyond!

Explore slow fashion, sustainable fashion and ethical fashion, shop and donate second hand and help create a fairer world.

Since 2019, Second Hand September has inspired thousands of people to shop in a way that is kinder to people and planet. Read more about Oxfam’s sustainability here.

Following Litter Free Dorset's campaign and the devastating heath fires of 2022, Southern Co-op committed to permanently removing disposable BBQs from sale - and they now have 8000 surplus units in storage. To ensure that we find the best route for this stock, Litter Free Dorset and Dorset Council are working with W&S Recycling to repurpose/reuse the component parts and send a message to other retailers that they too should be making this move.

Prevent, Inspire and Repurpose

1. Prevent food waste at source by storing food optimally, making use of every edible part of the ingredient and planning meals ahead of time
2. Inspire others to waste less, and repurpose more
3. Repurpose food by redistributing any surplus to your local community, or giving a second life to ingredients that most commonly go to waste

Join in the fight against food waste, one of the biggest contributors to climate change.

The theme for 2025 is "Buy Loose, Waste Less".
Research shows that selling items loose (unpackaged), so that people can buy just the amount they need, is an effective way to reduce household food waste.
