Brownsea Island Nature Reserve - re-opened

Message from Dorset Wildlife Trust -

We are so pleased to announce that our area of Brownsea Island will re-open on Saturday 5 August 2023.
The outbreak of avian flu had a devastating effect on the colonies of Sandwich terns, black-headed gulls and common terns which nest on the gravel islands in the Brownsea lagoon, particularly amongst the young birds.
But interestingly, we have also witnessed the incredible resilience of nature whilst the island has been closed. The flora and wildlife has flourished in the area around the lagoon, and avocet chicks are fledging on Brownsea for the first time.
Please note that the Tern Causeway and Tern Hide will remain closed to minimise disturbance to the fledging birds. There is a regular ferry service from Poole Quay and a  limited pre-bookable boat service which is available from Sandbanks jetty.
We look forward to welcoming you back to the island soon!
